Mechanism of action
- Survodutide is a dual agonist at glucagon and GLP-1 receptors.
- The GLP-1 component promotes glucose-dependent insulin secretion and satiety, while the glucagon component is intended to increase energy expenditure and hepatic fat metabolism.
- The aim of this combination is weight reduction beyond that of pure GLP-1 agonists, together with a favourable effect on the liver.
Research status
- Survodutide is in advanced clinical development (Boehringer Ingelheim / Zealand Pharma).
- A Phase II study (2024) in obesity documented substantial weight reductions versus placebo.
- A further Phase II study investigated survodutide in MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis) and liver fibrosis, with positive signals on liver histology.
- Phase III studies are ongoing; there is no market approval yet.
