The most common question about peptides is: is this legal in Germany? The short answer: it depends on the peptide. Some are approved, prescription-only medicines, others are not approved at all and circulate only as research material. This article explains the categories neutrally, with no sources and no purchase recommendations.

The legal categories

Whether a peptide may be used legally depends largely on medicines law. Broadly, four cases can be distinguished:

  • Approved medicine – tested and available as a drug (e.g. certain hormones).
  • Prescription-only – approved, but only on a doctor's prescription (e.g. semaglutide).
  • Not approved – not a tested medicine; often circulating only as research material (e.g. BPC-157).
  • Unclassified – no clear status under medicines law.

The research-chemical grey area

Many well-known peptides are offered online as for research use only. That explicitly means: not for human use. Commercial trade in non-approved medicines is regulated in Germany, and these products have no pharmaceutical quality control, so purity and content are not guaranteed.

Anti-doping in sport

Independent of medicines law: many peptides are on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list. Competitive athletes should check each substance's WADA status, as non-approved substances often fall under a catch-all category.

Check the status per peptide

Blanket statements do not help, as each peptide must be assessed individually. On every peptide page in our database you will find the legal status for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the EU as well as the US and Canada, plus the WADA status.
