§ 1

Mechanism of action

  • Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide, likewise developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
  • It is based on the sequence of the endogenous immunomodulator tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension for enzymatic stabilisation.
  • In preclinical studies, anxiolytic effects without sedative properties have been described — compared with benzodiazepines, no GABA-A modulatory mechanism was demonstrated.
  • Possible mechanisms discussed include modulation of the serotonergic system, inhibition of enkephalin degradation, and immunomodulatory effects via tuftsin receptors.
§ 2

Research status

  • Selank is approved as a medicine (nasal drops) in Russia and Ukraine for anxiety disorders and neurasthenia-like conditions.
  • Clinical studies from Russian institutions investigated anxiolytic efficacy; these studies do not meet Western GCP standards.
  • In a Russian randomised study (n=62), Selank was compared with mebicar; methodological shortcomings limit its informative value.
  • Western GCP-compliant studies do not exist.
  • Here too: the evidence base is limited by its narrow geographic origin and the lack of independent replication.

Is Selank banned in sport (WADA)?

Selank is currently not on the WADA Prohibited List.

What are the known risks of Selank?

Documented risks include: No Western GCP standard — safety profile not robustly established; Long-term effects on the GABAergic and serotonergic systems not studied. This is not a complete safety assessment and not medical advice — see the risks section for the full list.

How well researched is Selank?

The evidence is classified as “early clinical studies”. 2 studies are cited on this page.

What is the molecular weight of Selank?
