What it does in the body

Findings, each with its evidence level — animal data kept visibly apart from what's unproven in humans.

Claimed anxiolytic effect

Said to ease anxiety without making you drowsy — approved as a nasal spray in Russia, otherwise barely proven.

ANIMAL MODELS ONLY
Not a benzodiazepine

Works differently from classic sedatives (benzos) — the exact pathway is still unclear.

MECHANISM ONLY
Unproven by Western standards

The available studies come from Russia and haven't been independently confirmed.

Mechanism of action

What Selank does in the body — step by step.

01

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide, likewise developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

02

It is based on the sequence of the endogenous immunomodulator tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension for enzymatic stabilisation.

03

In preclinical studies, anxiolytic effects without sedative properties have been described — compared with benzodiazepines, no GABA-A modulatory mechanism was demonstrated.

Research status

How far along is the evidence?

PRECLINICALEARLY CLINICAL STUDIESCLINICALLY ESTABLISHED
Selank is approved as a medicine (nasal drops) in Russia and Ukraine for anxiety disorders and neurasthenia-like conditions.
Selank is approved as a medicine (nasal drops) in Russia and Ukraine for anxiety disorders and neurasthenia-like conditions.
Clinical studies from Russian institutions investigated anxiolytic efficacy; these studies do not meet Western GCP standards.
In a Russian randomised study (n=62), Selank was compared with mebicar; methodological shortcomings limit its informative value.
Western GCP-compliant studies do not exist.
Here too: the evidence base is limited by its narrow geographic origin and the lack of independent replication.

Known risks

Without human data, safety statements are limited. What is known:

01
No Western GCP standard — safety profile not robustly established
02
Long-term effects on the GABAergic and serotonergic systems not studied
03
Possible interactions with anxiolytics, antidepressants or antipsychotics not characterised
04
Intranasal: mucosal irritation possible with continuous use
05
Unknown tolerance development and withdrawal symptoms
06
Product quality cannot be verified from unapproved sources
